The 2024 US Open is over, and while it didn't bring any changes on top of the WTA Rankings, there was still plenty of movement.
Entering the last Grand Slam of the season, the reigning World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, knew she couldn't lose her top rank after the US Open. This was partly due to Aryna Sabalenka's run to the final of the tournament last year, which meant she was defending plenty of points.
As a result, the Belarusian could add 'only' 700 points to her total, which she did by winning the US Open. Thanks to that, she increased her points total from 8,016 points to 8,716 points, catching up to her rival ahead.
Swiatek started the tournament with 10,695 points, and although she also increased her points total, she added only 190 after dropping 240 and earning 430 for making the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals, she was beaten by Jessica Pegula, who was one of the movers of the week in the Top 10. The American player jumped up by three places after getting 1,300 points for her final participation, which is 1,060 more than she earned last year, moving her total from 5,160 to 6,220, which is enough for the third spot.
Another significant mover was semi-finalist Emma Navarro. The 23-year-old lost already in the first round last year, and this year, she made the semi-finals, which helped her to add 770 points to her total, increasing it to 3,810 points, which is enough for the eighth place in the WTA Rankings, which is also her new career-high.
The third American in the Top 10, Coco Gauff, went the opposite way to her two compatriots. Gauff won the US Open last year but lost already in the fourth round this year, which meant that she lost 1,760 out of the 2,000 points that she earned for her victory last year.
Because of that, her total dropped from 6,743 points, which was enough for the World No. 3 position, to 4,983 points, which sent the 20-year-old to the World No. 6 spot in the latest edition of the WTA Rankings.
Apart from the three Americans in the Top 10, other players didn't move a lot. Elena Rybakina retained her World No. 4 position after withdrawing from the tournament following her first-round win.
Jasmine Paolini stayed fifth in the rankings with 5,398 points to her name, while Qinwen Zheng still occupies her career-high seventh position with 3,980, the same as before the US Open.
Two players dropped by one position thanks to Navarro's rise to the eighth spot, as both Barbora Krejcikova and Maria Sakkari lost very early, dropping to ninth and tenth, respectively.
Out of the Top 10, there were also some significant moves. Paula Badosa moved up by nine places after making it to the quarter-finals, entering the Top 20 once again after spending a long period away from it.
Former World No. 7 Madison Keys went the opposite way, losing plenty of points after failing to defend her semi-final appearance from last year, dropping down by 10 places to the World No. 24 position.
Last year's quarter-finalist, Marketa Vondrousova, couldn't compete at the tournament, which also meant a drop in the rankings, as she slid down 11 places to 33rd position.
