Sofia Kenin will be competing at the 2023 Charleston Open thanks to a wild card awarded to her by the event organizers.
The Charleston Open has been a longstanding event on the WTA calendar owned and operated by the family of tennis player Emma Navarro. Her compatriot Sofia Kenin will be competing at the picturesque Daniel Island venue alongside Navarro, thanks to a wild card awarded to Kenin.
She’s been playing a lot of tennis this year in hopes of quickly getting back into the swing of things and possibly someday reaching the level that carried her to her first Grand Slam trophy at the 2020 Australian Open.
The event is always packed with some of the best players because it offers a unique experience of playing on a type of clay that isn’t featured anywhere else. It’s a green clay, and this year’s edition will feature five Top 10 players.
As for Kenin, the president of Charleston Tennis LLC, Bob Moran, explained why the event organizers chose to give a wild card to Kenin, adding her name to the strong field of players.
"Adding Sofia to our already strong player field reinforces the level of talent that will be on display in April at the Credit One Charleston Open. As a Grand Slam champion and former top 10 player, we are happy to support her return to tennis competition after injuries."
"Our attendees are in for a great nine days of tennis in April, where the best in women’s tennis will be in competition at the Credit One Stadium."
Kenin has dealt with many injuries since her maiden Grand Slam triumph. It prevented her from playing her best tennis for a while, but she’s hoping to turn things around in 2023, and she’s shown a few positive glimpses so far.
Over the past few years, she demonstrated that she's one of the best players on the WTA Tour, but after finishing in the Top 15 every year from 2019 until 2021, the American was ranked out of the Top 200 at the end of the 2022 season.
But now, in 2023, she's hoping to regain some of her previous form. After recently beating Sloane Stephens in Indian Wells, and the likes of Liudmila Samsonova in Doha, and Anhelina Kalinina in Hobart, Kenin can certainly return to her old level sooner or later, and she will hope that the clay-court part of the season will help her achieve that goal.
Her wins show that the potential is still there, but the consistency is not because she’s missed so much time, which she hopes to get back this year, and wild cards like the one in Charleston should help with that.
This year's Charleston Open will run from April 3rd to 9th, with the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, Sloane Stephens, and Jelena Ostapenko competing.
