After losing to Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open, Serena Williams' tennis career came to an official conclusion, and she was honored by the current president of the United States, Joe Biden.
What was merely announced a couple of weeks ago finally came to fruition as Serena Williams played what will likely be the final match of her career.
After two decades of playing superb tennis and creating records, her career is now officially over. It seems odd, but all good things end, and her career ended with a respectable defeat to Ajla Tomljanovic.
The bright lights of New York were perhaps the ideal setting for the conclusion of the 23-time Grand Slam champion's tennis career. There is no place where this could have been more iconic, and the crowd surely showed up and backed their player, celebrating her career one final time.
US President Biden took the chance as well, reacting on social media to her final match and, ultimately, her retirement. He wrote that Serena is an inspiration and a champion for all eternity, which is correct.
Not only did she create the blueprint that was followed by most of the great players today, but she also inspired countless others to take up a racket. Being a black woman makes her impact even more important due to the underrepresentation of the community in the sport.
She has truly been an inspiration and one of the greatest things to happen to tennis. She is the greatest player of all time and was fittingly remembered by President Biden in his tweet.
"Serena Williams, you’re an inspiration, a champion of all time. Thank you for dreaming, daring, and proving that anything is possible."
President Biden wasn't the first one, and he likely wasn't also the last one congratulating the legendary player on her career.
