Patrick Mouratoglou's short message to Serena Williams after she officially became a retired player enraged several fans.
Mouratoglou had a lengthy and successful period as Williams' coach from 2012 until 2022. The American played some of the best tennis of her incredible career with the Frenchman as her coach.
Williams won ten Grand Slams, the 2012 Olympic gold medal in women's singles, and three WTA Finals titles during their tenure together. Mouratoglou officially stopped working with the 40-year-old during this year's clay court season.
He now works with Simona Halep and helped her win last month's Canadian Open. However, the Romanian suffered a surprising loss to world No. 134 Daria Snigur in the first round of the US Open.
Although Mouratoglou and Halep could achieve great things together, he will always be best known for his time with Williams. That meant a a lengthy and heartfelt message may have been expected after Williams bid farewell to professional tennis, losing her final match to Ajla Tomljanovic.
Instead, many fans were left stunned by Mouratoglou's abrupt social media message afterward. He thanked Williams, but what the Frenchman wrote did not contain much warmth or fond memories.
“What a ride it has been. Thank you for everything. I wish you the very best for the next chapter!”
Hundreds of posts online expressed disappointment about Mouratoglou's message. One fan was amazed that he made so little effort after ten years of working with her.
“Serena and Patrick worked together for 10+ years and that post is the best he could do?”
Another social media user mentioned that he could write a novel about Williams after so much time as the 23-time Grand Slam champion's coach, making his short message even more surprising.
“He should have written a whole novel about her”.
Although neither of them has confirmed it, Mouratoglou's abrupt message might indicate that the pair's partnership did not end well.
