Carlos Alcaraz and Nick Kyrgios showed massive respect for each other at this year's US Open as they named the other one as a favorite to win the event.
The 19-year-old Spaniard is enjoying a season that many dreamed of when they were still only teenagers. On the other hand, the 27-year-old Australian re-invented himself, and he's one of the most dangerous players on the ATP Tour.
So far in 2022, Kyrgios and Alcaraz both lost only nine times, and that's also one of the reasons why they entered the 2022 US Open as some of the favorites.
Speaking after his victory against Jenson Brooksby, the Spaniard was happy about how he played. He felt that he used his chances, which now gives him a chance to play at least one more match in New York.
"Well, I played amazing today. I would say the best match at the moment. Yeah, I feel great to have played this match today, a great level. I'm really happy with my performance today."
"I just thought that I had to be focused to stay playing at the same level. I knew I was going to have my chances to break his serve and stay in the set. I would say he got down a little bit after the second break. I make the most of my opportunities in the third set. I just tried to play at the same level and trying to be aggressive."
Alcaraz also spoke about the 2022 Wimbledon finalist. Prior to the last Grand Slam of the season, Kyrgios said that the young Spaniard was the top favorite, but Alcaraz sees it differently. According to him, Kyrgios could win.
"For me (it) is crazy that Kyrgios says that I'm the favorite or I'm going to win the tournament. I would say he's one of the favorites as well. He has the level."
"I would say he's more serious off the court. I would say he plays unbelievable. Everybody knows that. Yeah, he's one of the favorites to win the tournament as well."
