Maria Sakkari has played some decent tennis recently and she will clash with Veronika Kudermetova at the 2024 Charleston Open.
This is an interesting matchup between two players who can play decent tennis on clay. The court in Charleston is not a typical clay court, as the surface is unique and likely favors those who like it a bit faster, but both of the quarter-final protagonists are competent players who can play in various conditions.
Sakkari had some good runs at the French Open in the past, so she's the better fit on clay, but Kudermetova can play well on this surface. The Greek player played much better recently, making a good run at the Indian Wells Open, while Kudermetova has been playing below her level in 2024.
Both had good wins in Charleston, even though Kudermetova's were more impressive as she downed Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Head-to-head:
We've seen a couple of matches between them so far, and generally, Kudermertova struggled against Sakkari. The H2H score favors the Greek, who leads it 3-1, but we haven't seen the play in a while.
Sakkari won the two most recent matches, which happened in 2021, but they never played on clay. They certainly never played on green clay, so this will going to be an interesting match, as the Russian seems to be playing pretty well right now.
She's a good baseline player and, on her day, arguably even better than Sakkari, so that's something to consider.
Maria Sakkari | Veronika Kudermetova | |
3 | H2H | 1 |
7 | Rank | 19 |
28 | Age | 26 |
14-6 | 2024 W/L | 6-8 |
457-294 | Career W/L | 350-234 |
Prediction:
Even though the Russian found her level a little bit at the event, I still favour Sakkari here because she's played pretty well recently and generally plays really well in the United States.
Prediction: Maria Sakkari to win in three sets.
