Danielle Collins is on fire right now, seemingly unable to lose, but Elise Mertens will try to change that at the 2024 Charleston Open.
The Belgian has been playing pretty decent tennis lately. Being back on clay should certainly help her good form going, but more generally, she has been playing well lately, even though it's not quite the level she had at her peak.
On the other hand, this might be the best level we ever saw from Collins, who has now won 10 matches in a row dating back to her triumph at the Miami Open. She has a chance to book the semi-final of the Charleston Open and is looking really good to make it there.
She's the favorite against Mertens mostly because of her form, as their head-to-head record actually doesn't favor either player.
Head-to-head:
They have played a few times so far, with the H2H score being 3-3, so neither really was able to dominate the matchup so far. Their most recent match happened this year in Hobart, which Mertens actually won comfortably 6-2, 6-3.
Mertens also won the match before that at the US Open, so recently, it's been going really well for her against Collins. She has a pretty good game to counter the American, but doing so right now will be very tough.
Danielle Collins | Elise Mertens | |
---|---|---|
3 | H2H | 3 |
22 | Rank | 30 |
30 | Age | 28 |
23-7 | 2024 W/L | 15-4 |
249-146 | Career W/L | 427-245 |
Prediction:
Collins's current run will eventually end, as all of the runs do. Still, she should be able to win this match because right now, she's just playing too well. She's also on home soil and is being backed by a lot of people, so it's just the spot where I favor her.
Prediction: Danielle Collins to win in two sets.
