Kerber Takes Late Wild Card Into Austria Open Linz After Early Australian Open Loss

Angelique Kerber returned to tennis Down Under with a couple of exciting matches, and her comeback will continue at the 2024 Austria Open Linz after taking a wild card entry.

The last time we saw the German play before her recent comeback was in 2022 at Wimbledon. After that, Kerber announced her pregnancy, pausing her career until further. She became a mother in the meantime and confirmed her comeback for 2024, which happened recently.

The first event back was the United Cup, where she played a few matches to shake off the rust. Her first win back came against Ajla Tomljanovic in that competition, and that's been her only win so far.

Expectedly, there were some struggles early, which is why Kerber is opting to play as much tennis as possible in hopes of getting back to a decent level quickly.

She played six matches and won only one, as her Australian Open ended in a first-round exit to Danielle Collins. Her next and third event of the year will be the WTA 500 tournament in Linz, as she took a wild card entry into the event, which begins in five days on January 29th.

It's an indoor event belonging to the WTA 500 category, so it's a pretty decent place to continue her comeback journey. It gives out plenty of points and will offer a solid challenge due to the strong entry list.

The event has a pretty strong entry list, even though quite devoid of star power, which is ideal for Kerber. She'll be challenged by most players but not overly dominated as they're on a similar talent level as her.

Just the right ingredients to continue her comeback, which is more than just a retirement Tour. She has high hopes for it, including the Olympic Games later this year, where she aims for some medals.
