Daria Kasatkina will be back at Wimbledon after missing the event last year and she's excited about coming back.
Kasatkina is Russian and due to that was unable to play at the event last year. She didn't really protest the ban last year admitting that she understands it because there are far more important things than tennis. She's generally been one of the better-received Russian players on the WTA Tour due to her outspoken nature which doesn't align most of the time with the views of her country.
She's been openly against the War, she's part of the LGBTQ+ community which certainly didn't create a lot of enthusiasm back home. She was even personally attacked because of it but Kasatkina remains unshaken doing what she thinks is right.
Her return to the UK was rather warm which she was really really appreciative of. It happened in Eastbourne and she hopes it continues at Wimbledon as well. She loves the event, it's very iconic with only the champagne being distracting.
I mean, the tournament is the most classic tournament we have. The only disturbing fact on the matches is the popping of the Champagne. (Laughter.)
Roland Garros was an unfortunate experience for many players including Kasatkina who spoke about it. Wimbledon is unlikely to have the same feel as the atmosphere is rather special. She loves it and is simply glad to be back.
Yeah, Wimbledon got special atmosphere, and, I mean, it's a really special tournament. I'm really happy to be back there.
Her first round matchup is against Caroline Dolehide whom she never played before but her recent performances have been rather solid so expected Kasatkina to likely pass that test with flyign colours. The match is expected to be played on Monday, July 3rd - the first day of the event.
