Iga Swiatek vs Naomi Osaka: 2024 Roland Garros - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Neither Iga Swiatek nor Naomi Osaka will be thrilled to play each other in the second round of a major, but they will meet at the 2024 Roland Garros.

Swiatek started her 2024 Roland Garros with an impressive win over native player Leolia Jeanjean. It wasn't the most spectacular match she had ever played in Paris, but it was a decent start to what might end up being a historic campaign if she wins it.

Osaka had a tougher time in her match, but it's partly her fault because she played well but lost focus in a very bad time in the second set and then again in the final set.

Overall, they both showed what we might expect from them in this matchup, and it doesn't look too favorable for the Japanese player since her opponent is by far the better player right now and on clay.

Head-to-head:

The two have played only two times so far, and that's mostly because Osaka has been absent from tennis in recent years. Their first clash came in 2019, and the Japanese player won that match in two sets.

It's not a huge surprise because, at that time, she was the better player. Things changed by 2022, as Swiatek was the top player back then, and she bested her opponent in the Miami Open final.

It was a convincing win for the Polish player, and that's also one of the reasons why she's favored in this match.

Iga Swiatek Naomi Osaka
1 H2H 1
1 Rank 134
22 Age 26
39-4 2024 W/L 13-9
320-70 Career W/L 278-157

Prediction:

The match is played on clay and she's the better player on that surface. She's also in better form but Osaka's hitting can be tremendous at times. If she puts up a hitting clinic, she might make the match interesting, but the world no. 1 should still win.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in two sets.
