Iga Swiatek began her 2024 Roland Garros campaign with a solid win against a tricky opponent who had some good moments.
Leolia Jeanjean first drew attention a few years ago when she had a pretty surprising run at the 2022 Roland Garros. She advanced to the third round, beating Karolina Pliskova along the way, which was quite notable.
She made the second round last year, but this year, she ended already in the first round. The French native did a good job getting through the qualifiers, but beating Swiatek on these courts is virtually impossible.
Even so, she had some really good moments, like breaking her serve. The Pole arrived in Paris after some amazing weeks on clay, winning in Madrid and in Rome.
She beat Aryna Sabalenka in both of those finals, further cementing herself as the top favorite for this major, and the first set certainly looked like the top seed played it.
It was a 6-1 win in just 28 minutes of play behind an impressive 14 winners. As good as Swiatek is, she doesn't stop being amazing with how she plays tennis because she looks slightly better at every event she plays.
Jeanjean's second set was much better, but she was still no match. Despite taking an early break and holding on for a while, the Polish player slowly overwhelmed her opponent with her tremendous consistency.
Her movement and shotmaking were just incredible, even though she missed quite a bit more in this second set. The final score ended up being 6-1, 6-2 for the world number one, who hopes to make history at this year's Roland Garros by becoming only the third female player in history to win 3 Roland Garros trophies in a row.
This was a good start, but next up is Naomi Osaka, who can properly challenge her in a battle of four-time Grand Slam champions.
