Iga Swiatek defeated no. 3 seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-2 in the 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix final on Sunday, and the Polish star won her fourth straight WTA title and 23rd successive match.
Iga Swiatek's winning streak began with a triumph at the Qatar Open, and she went unbeaten in WTA 1000 events this year by winning the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami.
Swiatek had a 19-match winning run heading into the indoor clay of the 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, thanks to two more wins for the Polish national team in Billie Jean King Cup qualification against Romania.
At the 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, the Pole had no problems against Sabalenka in the final, and that meant that she had added yet another title to her incredibly successful 2022 season. After the match, Swiatek spoke about the title but also about her win streak.
"For sure right now I need to work harder to keep this streak, but I’m just going to take it match by match, and I’m super proud of myself and really satisfied. These are the kind of players who were role models when I was growing up."
Part of the streak came on the clay courts, and it's expected that Swiatek will extend it even further on the red clay. She's simply the best clay-court player on the WTA Tour, and it isn't by a chance.
According to the Pole, she has worked hard to perfect her clay-court game, and that's why she can be so dominant on the surface now.
"I worked hard this week to adjust properly and to play my best tennis on this surface. I’m pretty proud of myself and pretty proud of my team because basically after yesterday’s match, it wasn’t easy to reset physically and mentally and be ready for today."
