Iga Swiatek continued her stellar 2022 with her eighth WTA title of the year on Sunday with her win at the San Diego Open.
The Polish World No.1 beat Donna Vekic in three sets to win her 64th match of the season and further demonstrate she is now the dominant force in women's tennis.
Swiatek's 'brutal' 2022 form equates to two of the four Grand Slams this year and the loss of only eight matches, meaning she will become only the fourth player since rankings began to end the year with over 10,000 ranking points.
She has won eight of nine finals played this season with her only loss coming to Barbora Krejcikova in the Czech Republic the week before San Diego.
Sunday's win on the west coast of the US leaves Swiatek on 10,835 and means she has a larger point advantage over second place Ons Jabeur than the Tunisian's total point tally.
After the win, Swiatek said: “I think this is going to be the season that I’m going to be thinking of for the rest of my life.”
Only Victoria Azarenka , Maria Sharapova - both in 2012 - and Serena Williams in 2013 has a WTA player passed the 10K milestone. That year, Williams ended the year with 13,080 points after winning 11 titles, a target out of reach for Swiatek this year.
Swaitek will not appear on court again until the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, beginning October 31. She has chosen to skip the final WTA 1000 event of the year in Guadalajara so she can rest up ahead of her final event.
