The coaches of Spanish duo Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz have been named in the ballot for the 2023 International Hall of Fame.
Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero are amongst seven returning nominees in the player category hoping to be inducted into tennis' way of recognising its all-time greats.
The pair join Daniel Nestor, Flavia Pennetta, Cara Black, Lisa Raymond and Ana Ivanovic.
Pioneering Moya
Moya was a clay court specialist, with his crowning moment being when he became French Open champion in 1998. A year later he became the first Spaniard to reach the peak of the ATP rankings when he captured the World No.1 berth.
He spent more than 200 weeks inside the world top-10 and won 20 career titles 0 with 16 being on the red ash of clay. He also won the 2004 David Cup for Spain.
Moya has tutored and coached Nadal since 2016, and has help the all-time great evolve throughout their time together. He has been in the Nadal box as he won eight of his 22 Grand Slam titles (1 x Australian Opens, 5 x French Opens, 2 x US Opens) as well as watching the 36-year-old Mallorcan win eight ATP Masters 1000.
Ferrero beats the big boys
Juan Carlos Ferrero followed a similar path to Moya, also part of the Spanish Davis Cup winning squad of 2004, adding that one to the won he won in 2000. The right-hander from Onteniente, Spain was known for his two-handed backhand which helped him topple everyone he met on the way to the 2003 Roland Garros title.
Ferrero also reached World No.1, backing up his French Open title with a run to the US Open final where he lost to an inspired Andy Roddick following wins over Todd Martin, Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi.
He spent 175 week in the top-10 and finished his career with a 64.4% win record.
Candidates on the 2023 ballot will go before the official voting group which includes media, Hall of Famers, and tennis historians. The top three candidates from fan voting, which will run from Oct. 20-30, will receive additional percentage points to their vote totals from the official voting group.
In order to make it into the Hall of Fame, a candidate must receive a vote of at least 75 per cent from the combined total of the official voting group and any additional points from fan voting.
