Coco Gauff is out of the 2024 Miami Open after an up-and-down performance against Caroline Garcia.
The French player is having one of those weeks when everything clicks for her. In the second round, she outplayed Viktoriya Tomova, and in the third round, she defeated Naomi Osaka, who was already finding her top form.
In the fourth round of the competition, Garcia took on the home player, who won both of her previous matches without losing a set. The 20-year-old even had a chance to reach the world no. 2 spot at the event, but that disappeared with the loss to the Frenchwoman.
In the first set of the match, Garcia was just the more solid player. She got an early break as Gauff started the match on the back foot, and after that, she held her serve easily, winning the opening set 6-3.
But in the second set, Gauff showed why she won the 2023 US Open. She won 16 of the first 19 rallies, and she even had a set point to bagel her opponent (win the set 6-0).
That didn't happen as Garcia was able to win a game, but with a hold to love, the American took the second set 6-1, sending the match into the third-set decider.
Gauff had a better start also in the third set, having a total of four break points in the first game of the match. However, she didn't use her chance, as she lost seven points in a row, losing her serve in the next game as well.
She was not able to recover after that, losing the third set after one more break from Garcia, who won the match 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the 2024 Miami Open. Up next, the French player will play against the winner of the match between Sorana Cirstea and Danielle Collins.
