Gauff gets perfect revenge against doubles world no. 1 as she continues winning streak

| by Zachary Wimer

Coco Gauff certainly wanted to forget how the 2022 season ended, and it seems that she did that really well as she entered 2023 with six consecutive victories.

Moreover, the 18-year-old American won all twelve sets in those six victories, as she defeated doubles world no. 1 Katerina Siniakova 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open.

The Czech player took part in the disastrous end of Gauff's 2022 season as she was the last player to defeat her. The two met at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, and Siniakova won in two sets.

However, everything was much different in Melbourne. Gauff was coming from Auckland, where she triumphed without losing a set, and was full of confidence against a lower-ranked opponent.

Both players had a really strong start on their service games as Gauff became the first player to win a point on her opponent's serve in the fourth game. Additionally, she translated that into the first break of the match and took a 3-1 lead.

After a solid hold of her serve and another break, the teenager was now up 5-1 and serving for the set. She handled the pressure well and after 23 minutes, she led in the match of two players that climbed to the world no. 1 spot in the doubles rankings, after taking the first set 6-1.

But the second set proved to be a much more difficult task for Gauff. This time, she was the first player, who lost her serve and faced a 2-4 deficit after six games played.

Yet, the American showed her best tennis once again, got two breaks and at 5-4, she was serving for the match.

Gauff needed the longest game of the match to seal the deal as he used her seventh match point in the tenth game. After an hour and 15 minutes, she defeated Siniakova 6-1, 6-4 and will await Emma Raducanu or Tamara Korpatsch in the second round.
