'Fourth Round Is Nothing': 16-Year-Old Prodigy Andreeva Sets Sight On Grand Slam Title

by Zachary Wimer

Tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva had to work hard to find herself in the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open, but she doesn't think it's a special achievement.

Reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam at 16 years old is quite something, but for tennis phenom Mirra Andreeva, it's not "a big deal." Highly motivated players want to win trophies, so achievements like these mean nothing to them, and that may be the case with this teenage prodigy who took the WTA Tour by storm.

There aren't many 16-year-olds in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for a reason, and it's because it's tough to get there. She should know best because she had quite a complicated matchup against Diane Parry.

Securing a place in the fourth round required quite an effort, but she got it done. Now, the Russian set her sights on even more success, as she refused to sensationalize her achievement, even though it's truly sensational.

"I didn't really have time to think what's happening. I don't think it's a big deal. I mean, fourth round, yes, I'm 16, maybe it's a bit new. Honestly, I don't think that I did something amazing. I'm just trying to win a match. I'm just trying to fight."

It was quite a fight indeed, much more than her previous matches, like her win over Ons Jabeur. Now, it's about backing it up and going further, especially since she mentioned winning the trophy.

It's not likely to happen, but the fact that she stated that it is a goal is pretty impressive. We'll see what happens in the coming days and how far she can go, as her next opponent will be former Roland Garros champion, Barbora Krejcikova.

"Fourth round is nothing. Maybe if I win a slam, I have to win three more matches, and it's really tough to win seven matches in a row. I don't think that I did something incredible. I have time to do it, I hope."
