'I Was At The Airport Already': Swiatek On Sensational Comeback Win At Australian Open

by Zachary Wimer

Iga Swiatek was on the verge of defeat against Danielle Collins at the 2024 Australian Open, but she came back in fantastic fashion to win in three sets.

Swiatek and Collins played quite a few matches in the past, and generally, the Polish player had the upper hand. One of those matches was played in Australia, and Collins won that match easily, which almost happened again.

It wouldn't have been as easy, but it would have been a major upset as Swiatek is widely considered the favorite for the trophy. Collins was up early with a break but then lost the opening set.

She bested Swiatek in the second set to win it and then was up 4-1 in the final set, but then she lost five games in a row to lose the match. It was a tremendous comeback, which Swiatek commented on after the match, explaining that she was basically at the airport already.

"I was in the airport already. I wanted to fight until the end. I knew she played perfectly but it would be hard for anybody to keep that level and I wanted to be ready when mistakes came from the other side. I wanted to push then, I did that and I'm proud of myself because it wasn't easy."

It wasn't easy, it was quite a thriller which she wrote on the camera after the match. She also commented on the match on her Twitter, writing, "It's not over until it's over..."

Wins like this can propel a player to a new level, so we'll see if Swiatek hits a new level and whether it pushes her to the finish line.

It was quite a close call, but it won't get any easier. She'll now face Linda Noskova in the next round, a tricky player who can certainly make it challenging for her as well.
