Aryna Sabalenka vs Amanda Anisimova: 2024 Australian Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Aryna Sabalenka has been the most impressive player so far at the 2024 Australian Open, and she'll try to keep that going against Amanda Anisimova.

The Belarusian won the 2023 Australian Open by being the absolutely best player during those 14 days. In these past 4-5 days, Sabalenka has once again been the most dominant player so far, and nothing shows it better than her last match, which ended with the scoreline 6-0 6-0.

Anisimova has also been pretty decent, as she took down Paula Badosa in her latest match. She's got tremendous hitting potential that can be dangerous to anybody, and even Sabalenka admitted that. She's quite excited to play against Anisimova due to the battles they had in the past.

"Well, first of all, I'm happy that she's back on tour. Secondly, we had a lot of great matches against each other, always tough battles."

Head-to-head:

Sabalenka and Anisimova have played five times so far in the WTA Tour-level matches, and the American actually leads 4-1. Most of those matches happened over a year ago because Anisimova didn't play much last year, but it's still a good way to understand the matchup.

Only the first few ones, a few years ago, went to straight sets, with the rest being very close matches that went to three sets. That's quite exciting ahead of this new matchup, as both are playing pretty solid tennis right now.

Aryna Sabalenka Amanda Anisimova

2 Rank 442
25 Age 22
7-1 2024 W/L 4-1
364-175 Career W/L 141-86

Prediction:

Even if Anisimova is playing really solid tennis right now, there is simply more of a recent success history with Sabalenka. She won the event last year; she's looking absolutely amazing this year, so it's clear that the court suits her, and she's feeling confident here.

Anisimova might make it interesting, but I can't see her winning this one. Sabalenka is simply too strong right now.

Prediction: Sabalenka to win in two sets.
