Mirra Andreeva showed her incredible resilience to reach the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open after beating Diane Parry.
The 16-year-old was fantastic in her first-round match, and in her second match, she thrashed Ons Jabeur at the Rod Laver Arena. In her third-round match, Andreeva had to play at a much smaller Court 3, and the downgrade was palpable also in her game.
Her opponent was the much better player early on. Parry used both of her break points, leading 5-0 in the opening set and serving for the set at 5-1. The young Russian had four chances to break back, but she didn't use any of them as the Frenchwoman converted her first set point to win the set 6-1.
But Andreeva said "anything you can do, I can do too" and repeated the same result also in the second set, but this time, in a more straightforward way, without facing any break points, winning 6-1 and forcing the decider.
And then, Parry said "anything you can do that I can do, I can do it again" and led 5-1 in the third set after breaking her opponent's serve twice, and it looked like an early exit for the 16-year-old.
However, when her opponent was serving for the match, Andreeva recovered one of the breaks. Then, she saved a match point on her own serve, and after that, the young Russian denied her opponent one more chance to serve out the match.
Paradoxically, in the following game, it was the Russian who served for the match after she broke Parry for the third consecutive time, but she couldn't transfer a 30-15 lead into a match win, as the third-round clash had to be decided in a match tie-break.
This time around, Andreeva dominated from start to finishing, winning it 10-5 to win the match 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) and reach the third round of the 2024 Australian Open, awaiting the winner of the match between the ninth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova and home qualifier Storm Hunter.
