Coco Gauff vs Caroline Garcia: 2024 Miami Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

Coco Gauff is looking as good as ever at the 2024 Miami Open, but she's facing a very tough player, Caroline Garcia, in the next round.

Garcia downed Naomi Osaka without many problems in the previous round. That clearly indicates that she was playing this week because Osaka herself was playing a really good event.

The conditions just work well for the French player, who uses the quickness of the court to her advantage. She generally serves pretty well, which makes things easier for her, while on return, she waits for slower serves, which she attacks immediately.

Osaka had a lot of problems keeping her opponent away from chances, and Gauff will have similar worries. She has a powerful serve, but it can be a bit shaky at times. She can't allow herself that, and while she has largely cruised so far, she hasn't really faced a player of Garcia's caliber.

Head-to-head:

Gauff and Garcia played a few times on the WTA Tour, though not recently. Three of their matches happened in 2022, and they didn't play last year. A lot has changed since 2022, as Garcia lost some of her peak form while the youngster improved massively as a player.

The H2H score right now is 2-2, with Garcia winning the last two matches in 2022. I wouldn't necessarily call that accurate, but it's proof that the Frenchwoman, at her best, can certainly defeat Gauff.

Caroline Garcia Coco Gauff
2 H2H 2
27 Rank 3
30 Age 20
8-7 2024 W/L 18-4
459-346 Career W/L 193-86

Prediction:

I think this will be a very complicated matchup for Gauff, and she might run into some problems. A lot will depend on Garcia, though. If she has her day, she could have win this match.

She had it against Osaka, but she hasn't been able to string together many great matches recently. Therefore, I believe Gauff will find a way to win in the end.

Prediction: Coco Gauff to win in two sets.
