Aryna Sabalenka snapped Danielle Collins's winning streak at the 2024 Madrid Open and will now try to do the same with Mirra Andreeva's winning streak.
The Belarusian is the defending champion at the WTA 1000 event, but her campaign so far has been full of tough matches. She's not cruising through the draw as a defending champion might, but that just shows the strength of the Tour right now.
She snapped Collins' 15-match win streak by beating her in the fourth round. It was a tough match, and she needed three sets, but she was able to outlast the very solid American.
Andreeva has a winning streak of her own, though it's only a 4-match winning streak. Still, some of those wins were pretty impressive, especially the one against Jasmine Paolini, who has been one of the better performers this year.
Head-to-head:
The two quarter-final protagonists have played two times so far, but only one was an official match because the other was an exhibition match. The one that counts was actually played in Madrid last year, with Sabalenka easily winning in two sets.
It was the breakthrough event for Andreeva, as she had already made it to the fourth round, where she was beaten by Sabalenka.
Fast-forward to now; the 17-year-old is an established player who is in the quarter-final in Madrid and will once again take on the Belarusian. It's not the most ideal matchup for her, but the second seed is not playing on the same level as she did last year.

Prediction:
I think Andreeva will do better this year than last year, but I don't think she will win. Sabalenka is looking more confident with each win she has in the Spanish capital, and while her tennis hasn't been special, she's still one of the best in the world.
Prediction: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
