The 2024 Italian Open in Rome is the last major clay-court women's tournament before Roland Garros, and details of prize money have been revealed.
Like the great editions of the past, this year's tournament is expected to be highly competitive due to its expanded format. The main draw action will begin on May 7th and run till the 18th, when the singles final will be held.
Although this is a joint tennis tournament running simultaneously on the ATP and WTA tours, the prize money differs. Tournament organizers hope that the pay discrepancy will be addressed by 2025.
The women's entry list will have a notable absentee, that is because World No. 5 Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from the event, possibly because of the same injury that kept her out of Madrid. The rest of the Top 10 remains unchanged.
Iga Swiatek will bid to win her third title at the Foro Italiano. Aryna Sabalenka, who is contesting this year's Madrid final alongside the Pole, will target improvement from a second-round defeat 12 months ago when she lost to Sofia Kenin.
Elena Rybakina recently shared her unhappiness with the tennis schedule, but the tournaments are coming thick and fast, and she can't afford any lapses in concentration.
While Coco Gauff, who will now wait before she becomes World No. 2, must rediscover her form before Roland Garros. The likes of Maria Sakkari, Qinwen Zheng, Marketa Vondrousova, Ons Jabeur, and Jelena Ostapenko will capitalize should the big names misfire.
The tournament has allocated a total prize money package of $5,509,771 (approximately €5,137,310), much higher than last year and the largest pool in Italian Open history. With such a substantial increase, players can expect healthy returns for their efforts this year.
The champion will collect the largest share of the total prize money, €699,690, in addition to 1000 ranking points. The runner-up will earn €365,015 and get 650 points.
Players who lose in the semifinal stage will also make six figures. Their paychecks will read €192,405, and they will also receive 390 points. Quarterfinalists will earn €99,160 and receive 215 points.
With the tournament running for two weeks, players must win four rounds to reach the quarterfinal. Those who stumble in the first round will pocket €10,495 and receive 10 points.
Winning at least one match will boost their earnings up to €16,965. These players will also get 25 points. Players who string two successive wins at the tournament are guaranteed to walk away with €30,435 and 65 points. The full breakdown of prize money and points distribution can be seen below.
