Running from April 1st to 7th, the 2024 Bogota Open will be a window of opportunity for the WTA's unheralded stars to make an imprint.
Held each year since 1998 (except for 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic), the Bogota Open was upgraded to a level over a decade ago and featured multiple top 10 players who lifted the title in its roll of honor.
But for the last two seasons, no woman has been able to beat Tatjana Maria. The German veteran has topped the podium in Colombia's capital in 2022 and 2023, dropping a combined three sets in the two years.
The entry list for the 2024 edition was released, and unsurprisingly, the 36-year-old mother of two is scheduled to appear in Bogota for her 11th main draw. Maria will pursue an unprecedented hat trick, which would be a record since the event became part of the WTA 250 category.
However, the top seed at the event will be Czech Marie Bouzkova, who will make her debut appearance. Spanish clay courter Sara Sorribes Tormo is also set to join her good friend and doubles partner Bouzkova in Colombia.
American big hitter Peyton Stearns reached her maiden WTA final last year at this very tournament. She loves the altitude, and her ferocious power is an asset in those conditions. She is the number four seed.
Bernarda Pera and Hailey Baptise are the other Americans who have signed up in the initial entry list. Camila Osorio became the first Colombian winner of this tournament in 11 years back in 2021.
However, the former junior No. 1 has been blighted by injuries and inconsistencies since then. Maybe a return to home turf will rekindle her glory days. Cristina Bucsa is also expected to be a threat on this surface, as is Diana Shnaider, who is already a WTA champion at 19.
Players like Kamila Rakhimova, Sara Errani, Maria Timofeeva, Jule Niemeier, and former finalist Laura Pigossi are also part of the field. Be sure to check the confirmed entrants for this tournament below.
