The second edition of the San Diego Open runs in the week after the US Open, and the draw for the event has just been released.
There have been a few changes from the initial entry list with the American pair of Coco Gauff and Madison Keys pulling out ahead of draw after the making the deep end of the 2023 US Open. Poland's Iga Swiatek, the defending champion will give the event amiss due to scheduling complications.
Gauff is due to play her first final at her home Slam, while a despondent Keys is still digesting her incomprehensible defeat to Aryna Sabalenka. But there have been notable changes in the seeds at the WTA 500 event, with those withdrawals and the inclusion of Barbora Krejcikova, a late wild card entrant.
We'll begin with the top half where the top seed Ons Jabeur will look to win her second title on US soil after capturing the Charleston trophy during the clay swing. Jabeur will receive a bye in her opening round, as will the other top four seeds in the tournament.
Her campaign will start against one of Anastasia Potapova or American Alycia Parks in the second round. Second seed Caroline Garcia is in the bottom half and will play the winner of Sloane Stephens or Elise Mertens. Third seed Maria Sakkari has a bye in her opener and is guaranteed to face a qualifier in her first match.
Among the early popcorn matches include the big-hitting contest between Jelena Ostapenko and eighth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. Brazil's No. 1 Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on Leylah Fernandez in the first round. The winner of that duel will face one of Marta Kostyuk or Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette in the second round.
Another Ukrainian in the draw Anhelina Kalinina will take on Karolina Pliskova for a second time this year, with the winner earning a date with fourth seed Barbora Krejcikova. To see the full draw for the 2023 San Diego Open, be sure to check it out below.
