The 2023 Australian Open will be held without the defending champion on the WTA side, but that won't make the event any less entertaining.
From the January 16th through 29th, some of the best WTA players will fight for the first Grand Slam title of the season. Ashleigh Barty triumphed in Melbourne last year but retired only a few months after that and so she's not featured on the entry list and there will be someone else lifting a trophy in 2023.
There's certainly not shortage of players that could do it. Iga Swiatek had an incredible 2022 season and she will want to prove also in 2023 that it wasn't a coincidence. On the other hand, Emma Raducanu, who won the 2021 US Open, had a terrible season and she will want to start strong and prove herself once again.
Similarly, Naomi Osaka didn't show her undeniable qualities for quite some time, and while the two-time Australian Open champion was set to start in Australia, she withdrew from the event, putting a big question mark on the start of her 2023 season.
2020 Australian Open champion, Sofia Kenin will also join the action as she's one of 11 players using protected ranking to enter the event.
Almost everyone from Top 10 of the WTA Rankings will be also considered as one of the top favourites, except for Simona Halep, who isn't listed on the entry list because of her doping case.
Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari and Jessica Pegula will all want to win their first major and there won't be better opportunity than coming well prepared in January.
