The 2022 Italian Open will be held in Rome from May 9th to 15th, and details of prize money for the women's tournament have been revealed.
It is the fifth WTA 1000 tournament of the season and one of the most important stops on the road to Roland Garros. The entry list for this tournament is known, and the draw will also be released.
Iga Swiatek is the defending champion at the Eternal City after demolishing Karolina Pliskova in the final last year. She will return to Rome, as will 18 more of the world's Top 20 players. The big absentee is 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, who is still nursing an elbow injury.
That means Paula Badosa, Aryna Sabalenka, and Maria Sakkari will be among those looking to dethrone the Pole as the reigning champion. The trio lost early in Madrid. Pliskova, the Czech sixth seed, will aim to give a better account of herself should she reach the final again. Former winner Simona Halep will also play.
This year, the tournament has committed a total prize money of €2,527,250. There will be a lot to fight for as the champion in the Italian capital will take home €332,260 in monetary compensation along with 900 points.
The runner-up will add 585 points to their points column in the WTA rankings and earn €195,813. Prize money distribution begins in the first round, with players who exit the tournament at this stage pocketing €9,456 but will gain 1 point.
Those who win one match in Rome will be guaranteed €13,176 in prize money and will be awarded 60 points. Third-rounders will each earn €23,170 and receive 105 points. The full overview of the 2022 Italian Open can be seen below.
