Tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva played the first qualifying match for Wimbledon and she did really well winning in two sets.
Andreeva announced herself earlier this year at the Madrid Open by beating Leylah Fernandez in a stunning upset. It quickly proved not to be an upset but rather a logical conclusion in a match where the then 15-year-old was simply the better player.
She then defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia, which is pretty hard to do, and then followed up those great performances with some impressive showings at Roland Garros. Many were excited to see Andreeva on some other surfaces and her start at Wimbledon certainly wasn't bad.
There was some doubt about her participation at the event due to a visa issue that was unresolved a few weeks ago but ultimately she was permitted to enter the country. She faced another youngster who is mostly known for playing well on clay and the Russian had no issues in winning that match.
It was a 6-3 6-1 win for Andreeva who had no problems luring her opponent in long rallies where she feels most comfortable. The Spanish opponent quickly started to pile up mistakes allowing the Russian to escape in two simple sets.
Andreeva, who is now 16, has had a spectacular season so far posting 20 wins in 23 matches so far. This win on grass was her only win away from clay which is by far her most dominant surface. It's not the only surface she can play on as her record on hard courts shows last year. She went 21-5 on hard courts in 2022 putting together a really impressive resume so far.
It's pretty clear that she's headed to stardom so the only question that people should be asking is when that stardom will happen. Weeks, months, years?
