Carlos Alcaraz is an incredible player at his peak, but when he struggles, it's very obvious, something Andrea Petkovic recently pointed out.
Something that many young tennis players struggle with, not just Alcaraz, is consistency. Some never learn to be incredibly consistent like Novak Djokovic is, while others become more solid throughout their tennis careers.
Alcaraz is still only 21, and he's incredibly successful, having won four Grand Slam titles. But sometimes, two things can be correct at the same time, and that applies also to this case.
Despite being incredibly consistent during his biggest wins, there were also times when Alcaraz was very inconsistent, which cost him better results, especially in 2024.
This year, the young Spaniard had some bad losses. Of course, the players he played against were top-level opponents who had a good day, but Alcaraz's top level is so high that expectations are also always high when he takes to the tennis court.
Only in the last few months of the 2024 season, Alcaraz lost to Gael Monfils, he was beaten by Botic van de Zandschulp, and Tomas Machac also stunned him.
All of them are, of course, great players, but at the same time, they are also players that Alcaraz can beat at his best level without too many issues. In fact, at his best level, the Spanish player can beat anyone without too many issues.
But it's the consistency that he lacks, which former WTA player Andrea Petkovic discussed during the recent episode of the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast.
The 37-year-old former player explained that this is a trait that none of Alcaraz's opponents have. She named Alexander Zverev, Taylor Fritz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic, who are all much more consistent than the Spaniard.
"The one quibble I have with Carlos is what the others don't have, Zverev doesn't have, even Taylor doesn't have, Jannik definitely doesn't have, Novak definitely doesn't have. When Carlos is bad, he is f***ing horrendous."
Petkovic also highlighted how Alcaraz seems to be lacking a plan B when things don't go his way. His level drops massively, which is then translated into the result of those matches.
"He doesn't have a plan B. Because you are still Carlos Alcaraz, who has won four Slams. But he then can't make a ball anymore. He's double-faulting, he's missing, he doesn't even get into a rally."
Petkovic compared Alcaraz's inconsistency to Sinner's consistency. While the Spaniard beat his Italian rival three times this year, Sinner was the much more successful player in 2024, mostly thanks to his incredible consistency.
"So when Carlos is bad, he's so bad. And at the highest level, he's probably the best player. He was 3-0 against Jannik Sinner, who was the best player this season. At his low level, he can still lose to Jakub Mensik, and Jannik Sinner would not lose to Jakub Mensik probably."
