Novak Djokovic's challenging 2024 season has not stopped Mats Wilander from believing in him. He thinks the Serbian will win another Grand Slam.
2024 marked the first time since 2017 Djokovic failed to secure one of the four Grand Slams. He dominated the sport in 2023 by winning the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open at the age of 36.
Wimbledon was the closest Djokovic came to a Grand Slam triumph in 2024. The former ATP world No. 1 bravely and impressively fought to the final despite being impacted by a knee injury but was crushed by Carlos Alcaraz at that stage.
However, despite those struggles, Djokovic still achieved his main goal of 2024 by obtaining the Olympic gold medal that had eluded him throughout his career. He defeated Alcaraz 7-6, 7-6 in the deciding match after a stunning serving display.
That memorable moment means Djokovic has now won every significant honor in tennis. The four-time US Open champion's underwhelming results at other tournaments, by his high standards, have led some to question whether he has the motivation and/or physical ability to succeed.
Sinner and Alcaraz split the four Grand Slams in 2024. Their young ages make it seem inevitable they will progress further, although Sinner's fortunes in 2025 depend significantly on the Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling in his doping case this year.
Djokovic responded to the challenge of competing against Sinner and Alcaraz in 2025 by appointing Andy Murray as his coach. The pair competed in seven Grand Slam finals from 2011-2016 and the deciding match of the ATP Finals.
Although Murray has never coached a player, Djokovic thinks he is the perfect appointment because he can relate to the challenge of competing on the most significant stages to try and secure the biggest trophies in tennis.
Murray has only joined at least initially on a short-term contract until the end of the Australian Open. Opinions differ about how successful the partnership is likely to be. John McEnroe believes their collaboration will not last long.
Wilander is optimistic about Djokovic's hopes. Although the Swede did not predict which Grand Slam he would most likely win, the three-time French Open champion told Eurosport that the Serbian could claim another major title.
"Novak Djokovic will win another Grand Slam is my prediction."
Former world No. 2 Alex Corretja and ex-British WTA No. 1 Laura Robson agreed with Wilander. However, Robson's answer did sound at least partially influenced by her compatriot Murray being Djokovic's coach.
"Yeah. He’s got Andy Murray as his coach, he’s got to win a Slam."
Djokovic is a ten-time Australian Open champion, and that incredible track record means the 37-year-old should never be ruled out in Melbourne. He reached last year's semifinal but was comprehensively beaten by Sinner in a match more one-sided than the final score suggests.
Sinner has beaten Djokovic in their last four meetings, and finding a way to beat him again will likely be crucial for the tennis legend. Doing that at his age would be one of the 24-time Grand Slam champion's most outstanding achievements.
