Nick Kyrgios hinted he could add pickleball to his activities in 2025 while talking to his former doubles partner Jack Sock in a recent podcast appearance.
Kyrgios' much-anticipated return to professional tennis at the Brisbane International is just a few days away. He has only played in one ATP tournament since the start of 2022, a failed comeback attempt at the 2023 Stuttgart Open.
The 29-year-old missed so much tennis because of severe wrist and ankle injuries. Kyrgios needed a wrist reconstruction, and his chances of returning to professional tennis before the procedure were 15%.
Those odds have been overcome, and Kyrgios will appear in the singles and doubles at the Brisbane International. 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has agreed to play doubles with the Australian.
Kyrgios' return has generated excitement among many because of his unique style. He is known for making controversial comments off the court and being a fiery and unpredictable character during matches.
Some do not like how Kyrgios acts and think it is a bad look for tennis. However, no one can deny that the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up brings attention to the sport and attracts viewers who might not otherwise be interested in tennis.
Jannik Sinner has been the most consistent target of Kyrgios' wrath in recent months because of his doping case. The ATP world No. 1 twice tested positive for the banned substance clostebol at the Indian Wells Open.
Sinner looked to be off the hook when the International Tennis Integrity Agency cleared him of wrongdoing, but the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and wants a ban of between one and two years implemented.
In an appearance on the Nothing Major Podcast, hosted by Sock, John Isner, Sam Querrey, and Steve Johnson, Kyrgios promised to show Sinner no respect if they meet at the Australian Open and also plans to turn the entire crowd against him.
Kyrgios also delved into other topics in his appearance on the Nothing Major Podcast. They included him and Sock discussing possibly competing in Pickleball tournaments together in Australia.
Sock, a former world No. 2 in doubles on the ATP Tour, retired to focus on pickleball. He told Kyrgios that he planned to play Pickleball in Australia in 2025, but only if the controversial former Wimbledon finalist competes alongside him.
Kyrgios did not give Sock a firm yes. In his response, he playfully mocked the American for previously calling the Australian Open his least favorite Grand Slam but being willing to travel to play pickleball.
However, Kyrgios seemed open to the idea. Sock revealed in a separate episode of the Nothing Major Podcast with Miami Open tournament director James Blake that he and Kyrgios would probably ask for a wild card into the Masters 1000 event in Florida.
That would mark Sock's return to tennis, but it seems like pickleball remains the sport he will play most often. Whether Kyrgios does take Sock up on his offer of a pickleball partnership remains to be seen.
