Stefanos Tsitsipas recently unfollowed everyone he previously followed on his social media accounts, and he finally explained why he did that.
As a successful professional tennis player, Tsitsipas is known worldwide. He has over 2 million followers on Instagram and nearly half a million followers on X (Twitter). However, a couple of weeks ago, he unfollowed everyone he followed on those social media accounts, so he's currently following exactly 0 people.
When Tsitsipas did that, fans started speculating as to what the reason behind his actions could be. Some linked it to his rumored breakup with Paula Badosa, while others didn't see it as something surprising when it comes to the Greek's online presence.
But there was a meaning behind unfollowing everyone. Tsitsipas realizes that he is not only a tennis player but also a role model for young kids, and as such, he wants to have a positive impact on those watching him.
Speaking to the Greek publication SDNA, Tsitsipas explained that he has recently spent a lot of time on social media, which he doesn't think is healthy. Because of that, he decided to unfollow everyone and reduce his social media usage.
"I spoke with the team that helps me with social media and I chose to unfollow all the people I was following on social media. It's not about the people I followed, but more about the fact that I want to become independent from social media."
"Lately, with all the traveling and stress I've been going through, I've been finding my peace, disconnecting from the stress through social media, which is wrong. I take out all my stress by going on social media and watching videos etc. for hours, because I like them."
"I realized that it would do me good if I set a goal for the next one, two, three years or even more, to not use social media. I have a team that does my professional work, keeping my authenticity, which is very important to me."
Tsitsipas linked his absence from social media to working on improving his mental health. He mentioned the likes of Naomi Osaka, Grigor Dimitrov, and Andrey Rublev as those who spoke about the topic.
"My goal is to show that I'm getting off social media and to give young kids, whether they play sports or not, an incentive to get out there too. It's about mental health, something that Grigor Dimitrov, Andrey Rublev, and Naomi Osaka have recently mentioned, and I wanted to support that."
"One of the negatives I've noticed is that they compare your life to other people's lives and don't see reality. They see a nice version. I want young kids to be dedicated to real life, playing sports, going out, doing activities that I did when I was little. There should be a better quality of life for everyone and we can go back to where we used to be."
Despite unfollowing everyone, Tsitsipas continues to post on his Instagram and X accounts, but the question remains whether he is doing it himself or if his team is managing those accounts for him. At the end of the day, many of his sponsorship deals are likely tied to his social media accounts as well, so to some degree, he will have to stay active.
