Carlos Alcaraz has been incredibly busy in the past few weeks, but he still plans to compete at the upcoming
Laver Cup.
Alcaraz is one of the players who has been vocal about the current tennis calendar being too busy and long. At the same time, he is also one of those facing plenty of backlash for his comments, as he often commits to competing in exhibition events.
One of those is planned right after the
US Open. Although the Laver Cup is officially recognized by the
ATP, it's still only an exhibition, as there are no ranking points awarded at the tournament.
Alcaraz won the US Open on September 7th, and the Laver Cup in San Francisco starts already on September 19th. After that, the Spaniard appears on the
Japan Open entry list. With such a tight schedule, many would expect the 22-year-old to skip the exhibition in San Francisco and focus on the ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo, which starts on September 24th.
However, according to the latest report from the Spanish publication
Marca, Alcaraz will return to the training courts on Saturday in his home base, and after that, he should travel to San Francisco on Monday.
Alcaraz changes his coaching setup for the upcoming weeks
Alcaraz's commitment to competing at the Laver Cup comes with a slight coaching change. He will be accompanied by his coach, Samuel Lopez, at the Laver Cup, and Lopez will then also travel with Alcaraz to the Japan Open.
After that, the world No. 1 player will be joined by Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Shanghai Masters, which starts on October 1st. Before that, in San Francisco, Alcaraz is set to appear on the courts with
his new hairstyle.
Alcaraz credits rival Jannik Sinner for his success
Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in two out of three Grand Slam finals that they played this year. The Spaniard beat his Italian rival at Roland Garros and also at the US Open. Speaking after his win in New York, Alcaraz admitted that Sinner pushes him to become a better player.
"For me it’s great. I think we push each other to the limit every time. My practices are just focused to see how I can be better just to beat Jannik. So I think the rivalry, it is special, splitting Grand Slams, fighting for the great things."
