Holger Rune played a great match against Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of the 2025 Indian Wells Open to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 final in two years.

Rune first reached a Masters final at the 2022 Paris Masters. It was a win that guaranteed him a Top 10 breakthrough, but the young Dane has since left the Top 10. Now, he's finally back to playing his best tennis, and that might open the doors into the Top 10 again for him.

The 21-year-old Danish player has competed really well throughout the week in Indian Wells, and even a two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev couldn't stop him.

Despite not liking the conditions at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Medvedev has been very successful at the first ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season. This year, he was in need of a good result when coming to the United States, and he partially achieved that by reaching the semi-finals, which he adequately celebrated.

However, the Russian player certainly wanted to reach his third consecutive final and finally try to win the trophy, but Rune was against it.

Both players started well in the opening games of the match, but that was only until the moment when the scoreboard showed 2-2. Rune was the first player to break, and he led 3-2.

But in one wind gust, which is very common in Indian Wells, Medvedev was suddenly the player who looked in charge of the match. The former ATP World No. 1 player broke back and even had a break point in the longest game of the match when leading 4-3.

But the 29-year-old player couldn't convert his chance, and it came at a costly price. Rune took over the control of the match, and despite not using a break point at 4-4, he used one at 5-5, going into a 6-5 lead.

The 2022 Paris Masters champion then held his own serve to win the opening set of the match 7-5, which was an ideal start for him, as it marked only the second set that his opponent lost at this year's event.

After losing the first set, the Russian player couldn't find any response in the second set. The second set was a set of very easy service holds, so much so that Rune was on a 13-point streak after breaking his opponent's serve to love.

Other than that, there were no deuces in the second set, and players lost more than one point on their serve when they held it only twice. Paradoxically, it was Rune both times.

But since Medvedev was the only player who lost his serve, the Dane had all the cards needed to win the match. Serving to win it at 5-4, the Dane likely felt some nerves as he started with a double fault and later fell behind 0-30.

However, Rune won the last four points of the match to win it 7-5, 6-4, booking his first ATP Masters 1000 final since the 2023 Italian Open in Rome. Paradoxically, that's the last tournament that Medvedev has won, beating the Danish player in the final.

This time, Rune will await the winner of the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper in the final of the tournament.
