Aryna Sabalenka still holds a significant lead at No. 1 in the
WTA rankings, but
Coco Gauff's title run at Roland Garros cut that advantage.
Gauff won a maiden Roland Garros and second Grand Slam title by recovering from losing the first set in the final against Sabalenka. The American handled the conditions better and played a superb tactical match to triumph 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Sabalenka struggled to deal with the loss, her second Grand Slam final loss of 2025, and left many fans disappointed after
she claimed that Iga Swiatek would have beaten Gauff, and that the loss was down to her making several unforced errors instead of the 21-year-old's good play.
The Belarusian issued a statement afterward expressing respect for Gauff, although it also mentioned that she did not play well. Despite her bitter disappointment, Sabalenka still gained points after bettering last year's quarterfinal run. She now has 11,553.
Gauff, who lost to Swiatek in the 2024 semifinals, moved from 6863 to 8083 points. She trailed Sabalenka by 3,820 points last week, but that has been reduced to 3,470 due to her heroics in Paris.
The updated rankings make for less pleasant reading for
Iga Swiatek. Having been No. 1 or No. 2 from April 2022 until a few weeks ago, the Pole dropped two more spots to No. 7, her lowest position in over three years.
Swiatek's hopes of winning a fifth Roland Garros title and first at any level since last year's triumph in the French capital ended after a 7-6, 4-6, 6-0 in the semifinal to Sabalenka. After two high-quality sets, the 24-year-old suddenly faded in the decider.
Qinwen Zheng had the best week of the Top 10 players, jumping from No. 7 to No. 5. The Olympic Gold Medalist lost to Sabalenka in the Roland Garros quarterfinals, although the match was competitive.
Paula Badosa moved up one spot to No. 9, overtaking
Emma Navarro.
Jessica Pegula at No. 3,
Jasmine Paolini at No. 4,
Mirra Andreeva at No. 6, and
Madison Keys at No. 8 make up the rest of the Top 10.
Naomi Osaka slipped out of the Top 50, dropping three places to No. 52. She lost an epic battle against Badosa in the opening round at Roland Garros in a deciding set and
was very emotional afterward.
Although
Emma Raducanu was thrashed 1-6, 2-6 by Iga Swiatek in the second round at Roland Garros, she still rose four spots to No. 37. The Briton will hope to do more damage during the grass-court swing.
Lois Boisson had one of the steepest rises in tennis history after her incredible run to the semifinals in Paris as a wild card. She is now the world No. 65, 296 places higher than at the start of her home tournament.
The talented 18-year-old Victoria Moboko also entered the Top 100 for the first time. She reached the third round at the season's second Grand Slam, losing to Zheng at that stage after wins against Lulu Sun and Eva Lys.
Ons Jabeur received much worse news in the latest rankings. She plummeted 18 positions to No. 54 after being defeated in the opening by
Magdalena Frech, continuing her difficult period since the 2023 Wimbledon final.
Some other notable points in the latest WTA rankings were
Elena Rybakina remaining No. 11, Alycia Parks and Jaqueline Cristian entering the Top 50, and Katie Volynets falling 28 spots to No. 93.
