Carlos Alcaraz's incredibly successful 2025 season ended on a sour note after he lost the ATP Finals final while battling an injury, which eventually forced him to withdraw from the Davis Cup.
Alcaraz reached the final at the ATP Finals in Turin without losing a match, but the Spaniard required medical attention already during the first set of his match against Jannik Sinner. He struggled with his hamstring.
Ultimately, Alcaraz lost the match in two sets, but following the loss, he refused to blame it on the injury. Not only that, the 22-year-old said that he plans to travel to Bologna, Italy, to compete at the Davis Cup Finals.
Alcaraz wasn't lying. He travelled to Bologna together with his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, on Monday evening and even met the team captain, David Ferrer. However, Alcaraz was forced to withdraw from the tournament only a few hours later.
First, Spanish publication COPE reported that Alcaraz has struggled with muscle edema and that he could miss the first tie of the Davis Cup Finals against the Czech Republic. But only a few hours later, even worse news arrived.
Journalist Ángel García reported on El Partidazo de COPE that Alcaraz will not play at the Davis Cup Finals at all because of the muscle edema, which significantly increases the risk of his muscle tearing, which is the last thing he wants to do at the end of a season.
For Team Spain, that means a huge blow to their Davis Cup chances. Jaume Munar and Pablo Carreno Busta should now play the country's singles match, while Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez should play the doubles matches.

Carlos Alcaraz is confident in his level on indoor hard courts

Alcaraz hasn't enjoyed the same kind of success on the indoor hard courts as Jannik Sinner has, but despite losing the final, the Spaniard seemed confident in his level in those conditions ahead of the Davis Cup Finals.
Speaking during his press conference after the ATP Finals, the six-time Grand Slam champion stated that he has never doubted his level on indoor hard courts.
"First of all, I never doubt about myself. I never doubt my level on the indoor court. I didn't doubt about playing and fighting toe to toe with Jannik on the indoor court. I thought at the beginning of the match, I thought right after just this match that I can beat him, that I can compete against him here."
"I wasn't surprised at all that I was really close. It was just about the tennis. I'm just really happy with the performance that I did today. I'm pretty sure that it's going to keep growing my level on the indoor court."
