Carlos Alcaraz will not compete at the 2025
Davis Cup Finals, and the Spaniard has now released a statement, confirming the reason for his withdrawal.
Only 48 hours ago, things were looking great for Alcaraz. The 22-year-old Spaniard was about to play the
ATP Finals final, and after that, he planned to represent his country at the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, Italy.
Earlier last week, he mentioned that his goal was to end the season with two more titles, the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals trophies. Unfortunately for him, both of those dreams came crashing down during the final in Turin.
Alcaraz required a medical timeout during the first set of his match against Jannik Sinner, and even though
he claimed the hamstring injury didn't affect him, it's now clear it likely did more than he was willing to admit.
Following his loss to Sinner at the ATP Finals, Alcaraz remained optimistic, saying he planned to travel to Bologna, Italy, for the Davis Cup Finals. He did just that, arriving in the Italian city on Monday evening.
But only a few hours after his arrival, reports from Spain indicated that
Alcaraz wouldn't be able to play at the Davis Cup Finals because of muscle edema in his right hamstring, which would be extremely risky due to an increased risk of a muscle tear.
That's why, despite disappointing some of the Spanish fans who travelled to Bologna, Alcaraz made the difficult but correct decision to withdraw from this year's Davis Cup Finals, which will run from November 18th until 23rd at the SuperTennis Arena Bologna Fiere.
Spain is one of the unseeded nations, and they will start against the Czech Republic. The other three ties will see the top-seeded Italy take on Austria, the second-seeded Germany play against Argentina, and the third-seeded France clash with Belgium.
The Davis Cup Finals will now be without the two highest-ranked players on the ATP Tour, as Jannik Sinner didn't even sign up for the event this year. His reasons are well known: he prioritized his health over playing the Davis Cup every year.
Alcaraz has now confirmed his withdrawal, posting on his social media accounts that he won't play the Davis Cup Finals due to muscle edema, which prevents him from competing.
"I'm absolutely gutted to announce that I'm not going to be able to play with Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna… I have an edema in the hamstring of my right leg, and the medical recommendation is not to compete. I've always said that playing for Spain is the greatest thing there is, and I was so excited to be able to help fight for the Salad Bowl. I'm heading home feeling heartbroken…"
