Carlos Alcaraz played his maiden final at the ATP Finals, but he lost it to Jannik Sinner and even injured his hamstring in the process.
The 2025 season was the most successful season of Alcaraz's career. He has won eight titles and had a chance to win his ninth at the ATP Finals and tenth at the Davis Cup Finals. That was his goal when he spoke about his title collection last week in Turin.
It won't be a two-digit number of titles for the Spaniard anymore, as he lost in the ATP Finals final to Jannik Sinner, who was the better player in the final. The Italian played better in all crucial moments, which is why he won the match 7-6(4), 7-5, even though there were plenty of moments when Alcaraz could have tilted the match his way, such as when he had a set point in the first set or when he led with a break in the second set.
During the first set of the match, Alcaraz called for a physio to address a hamstring issue. The physio then returned multiple times during the match, even bandaging the Spaniard's right thigh.
Naturally, one of the first questions the 22-year-old faced after the match was how much the hamstring injury impacted him during the final. Alcaraz refused to blame the loss on the injury, saying it didn't affect him, even though he had some doubts about his movement, which is usually one of his biggest weapons.
"I felt something in my hamstring after trying to catch one serve. I could say it didn't affect me too much, to be honest, because I could run well, I could go to the balls well. Obviously, the thoughts about how is going to be if I do crazy things that I'm used to doing, how it's going to be, those thoughts were in my mind sometimes. But I could play well."
"Don't get me wrong, because I'm not going to say I could play better or I could do something better if my hamstring were well. I could play a really good tennis with it. The loss is because he deserved it."

Carlos Alcaraz gives verdict on playing Davis Cup after hamstring injury

Team Spain Davis Cup captain David Ferrer likely watched the match closely and scratched his head when Alcaraz started to struggle physically. The six-time Grand Slam champion should be leading the country at the upcoming Davis Cup Finals, and his absence would significantly diminish the country's chances of success.
That's why Alcaraz was also asked about the Davis Cup after his final loss at the ATP Finals. The Spaniard said that he plans to fly to Bologna and compete at the Davis Cup despite the injury scare.
"Well, I didn't change the plan because of the injury. I changed it because I felt that I had to do something else. I'm trying to be as aggressive as I can on court every match, but especially I think even more against Jannik."
"Every time that I can, just trying to go forward. It works, to be honest, because I was a break up. I was serving well. That game, I think, was 3-2. I don't remember actually, but in the middle of the second set, I was up in the game. Few mistakes that I didn't have to make, to be honest."
"In general, I think it was a great plan that I did today. That's why I'm really happy with the level and the performance that I did today, because I think I didn't do too many things wrong, which is great. But, the Davis Cup, I'm heading off to Bologna tomorrow."
