Mirra Andreeva's heroics at the 2025 Indian Wells Open allowed the teenager to reach a career-best in the latest WTA rankings.
The 17-year-old overcame Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells Open final. She lost the first set 2-6, but stormed back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and secure a second WTA 1000 title after a memorable run that also included beating Iga Swiatek in the semifinal.
Andreeva's first WTA 1000 crown came just a few weeks previously at the 2025 Dubai Championships. She also defeated Swiatek at that tournament, demonstrating her ability to overcome the best.
The young talent was No. 11 in the rankings before the Indian Wells Open. Her superb success in California has allowed her to rise five places to No. 6, and she is less than three 300 points away from the No. 5 spot.
Sabalenka's agonizing final defeat was her second of the season after losing the 2025 Australian Open final to Keys narrowly in the deciding set. However, her efforts in Indian Wells were good enough to provide a rankings boost.
The Belarusian's lead at No. 1 has increased after finishing as the runner-up, a significant improvement on reaching the round of 16 in 2024. She sits on 9606 points in the latest rankings.
Swiatek at No. 2 dropped 600 points after being unable to defend the title she won last year. The four-time French Open champion is on 7375 points, leaving her with much work ahead to overtake Sabalenka.
There were no ranking changes in the Top 5. Coco Gauff, who Belinda Bencic beat in the Indian Wells Open round of 16, is at No. 3, Jessica Pegula is at No. 4, and Madison Keys is at No. 5.
Four players fell in the rankings due to Andreeva's rise. Jasmine Paolini dropped one place to No. 7, and Elena Rybakina, who was thrashed by Andreeva 1-6, 2-6 in Indian Wells, also slid one spot to No. 8.
Qinwen Zheng remains at No. 9, but Emma Navarro dropped two places to No. 10. The American lost in the round of 32 to Donna Vekic, who is back inside the Top 20 at No. 19 after rising three places.
Paula Badosa was the final player to fall because of Andreeva. The Spaniard, who could not compete at the Indian Wells Open because of a back injury, moved down one spot to No. 11.
Belinda Bencic is back inside the Top 50 after reaching the quarterfinals in Indian Wells. She shot up an impressive 13 places from No. 58 to No. 45, a remarkable achievement just a few months after returning from maternity leave.
By contrast, Maria Sakkari fell outside the Top 50 after plummeting from No. 29 to No. 51. The Greek reached the final of the 2024 Indian Wells Open, but could only get as far as the round of 32 this year, losing to Gauff.
Other WTA ranking changes include Ons Jabeur moving back into the Top 30 after rising two places and Karolina Muchova rising a spot to No. 14, replacing Danielle Collins, who dropped to No. 15.
