Teenage prodigy Mirra Andreeva's personality shone through with another hilarious winner's speech after securing the 2025 Indian Wells Open title.
Andreeva won her first WTA 1000 title at the 2025 Dubai Championships. During that run, she defeated Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek to become the youngest champion in 1000-level history at 17.
During her speech after the final in Dubai against Clara Tauson, Andreeva left the crowd in stitches by thanking herself for the achievement after putting in much hard work to make it a reality.
There was similar laughter when Andreeva repeated that act after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells Open final. She thanked everyone else first, including her coach, former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez.
As the final part of the speech, Andreeva decided to thank herself. The fans inside the stadium who were aware of the teenager's speech in Dubai undoubtedly found it particularly funny to see her doing the same thing again.
"Last but not least, I'd like to, again, thank myself. For fighting til the end and always believing in me. For never quitting. I tried to run like a rabbit today because Aryna was sending bullets."
"It was really hard to keep up, so I just tried to keep up. That's why I thank myself because I played a little part, also. So, thank you, everyone."
Despite losing the final, Sabalenka saw the humor in Andreeva's speech. She briefly interrupted the 17-year-old thanking herself with a comment that could not be heard, which led to Andreeva turning around and laughing.
Sabalenka also laughed when last year's French Open semifinalist said the Belarusian sent bullets throughout the contest. It was nice to see the ceremony being conducted in a good spirit after such an intense battle on the court.
Andreeva's talent will be enough for fans to watch her for years to come. However, having a great personality will only generate further attention to the WTA Tour, which is terrific for the sport as a whole.
Women's tennis is arguably in its best place for years. Andreeva seems destined to push the WTA Tour onto another level alongside other great players like Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek.
Andreeva being 17, Gauff turning 21 a few days ago, and five-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek still being just 23 means that, unless any of those players become injury-prone, fans will get to see them playing for many years.
Although many expected Andreeva to get near the top soon, her rapid rise since the 2025 Australian has come as a shock to many. Winning two WTA 1000 titles in the space of a few weeks at 17 is an extraordinary achievement.
Andreeva's rivals will try to respond at the 2025 Miami Open. Gauff, after playing at a very high level for a few months, including claiming the 2024 WTA Finals, has struggled since the Australian Open and is searching for form.
Swiatek was defeated by Andreeva for the second time this season in the Indian Wells Open semifinal, failing to defend her title from last year.
