The final WTA 1000 tournament of the season will be the 2025 Wuhan Open, and its prize money and ranking points have been released.
Last year's Wuhan Open was a triumphant return for the event. It got postponed from 2020 to 2023 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most Chinese tournaments returned in 2023, but Wuhan was excluded.
Aryna Sabalenka won her third consecutive Wuhan Open title, even though the gap between her second and third was five years. The WTA world No. 1 overcame home favorite Qinwen Zheng in the deciding set of the final.
The Wuhan Open will be played from October 6th to 12th. For the 12 days before that, from September 24th to October 5th, the China Open in Beijing, also a WTA 1000 tournament, is scheduled, making it a crucial three weeks on the calendar.
Iga Swiatek hopes for good results in Beijing and Wuhan in her quest to reclaim the world No. 1 spot from Sabalenka. The Pole also signed up for the ongoing 2025 Korea Open. If she plays well at those three tournaments, the No. 1 fight could be decided at the WTA Finals for a third consecutive year.
Sabalenka, Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Naomi Osaka, and all the other players will play for the best share possible of the $3,654,963 prize money purse, an impressive amount that rewards those who go deep at the tournament.
The 2025 Wuhan Open champion will earn $597,000 and 1,000 points. If one of the players outside of Sabalenka wins the upcoming event, it would mark the first new champion since Caroline Garcia's triumph in 2017.
Ashleigh Barty, Garbine Muguruza, and Eugenie Bouchard, who can now entirely focus on her pickleball career after retiring from professional tennis at the 2025 Canadian Open, are among those who have finished as runner-up in Wuhan.
This year's losing finalist will earn $351,801 and 650 points. Although both are very good rewards for being the second-best player at a tournament, the pain of losing at the final hurdle will still be severe for someone.
Gauff's semifinal against Sabalenka at last year's Wuhan Open was memorable for her almost winning despite hitting 21 double faults. The 2025 semifinalists will collect $181,400 and 390 points.
Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time Grand Slam singles runner-up Jasmine Paolini was among the beaten quarterfinalists at the 2024 Wuhan Open. In a few weeks, the four women who repeat that achievement will receive 215 points and $83,470.
120 points and $41,600 are the guaranteed rewards for the players who fall in the third round. That declines to 65 points and $23,500 for the second round losers. The Top eight seeds receive a bye into that round of the 56-player draw.
The women who do not manage to win a main draw match in Wuhan will still walk away from the WTA 1000 tournament with 10 points and $16,900. While no player wants to be eliminated at the first hurdle, the financial guarantee prevents it from being a waste of their time and effort.
