Each season, the Wuhan Open is held at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center in Wuhan, China. In 2014, the first Wuhan Open tournament took place. It was one of three new competitions launched in China that year.

Between 2014 and 2019, the event was a WTA Premier 5 tournament, which awarded 900 ranking points to the winner. However, in 2020, this system was removed by the WTA. The competition was not held from 2020 to 2023 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Its return was also delayed following professional tennis’ withdrawal from China over the Peng Shuai controversy. But the event returned to the calendar in 2024 as a WTA 1000 competition with both the singles and doubles draws taking place.

Due to its high-level status in the WTA schedule, many elite players have competed in the singles and doubles draw. Previous winners of the Wuhan Open since 2014 include former Grand Slam winners Petra Kvitova, Venus Williams, and Aryna Sabalenka.

However, Kvitova and Sabalenka are the only two singles players to win the event two times. Sabalenka also lifted the Wuhan Open in two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019. Similarly, some of the world’s best doubles players have achieved success at the Wuhan Open.

The likes of Martina Hingis, Sania Mirza, and Elise Mertens have won the doubles event. Hingis is the most decorated doubles player at the event, winning three times between 2014 and 2017.
