The grass-court part of the season will start with the 2025
Stuttgart Open, and the
draw for this
ATP 250 event has been released.
After getting their socks dirty on clay, tennis players will move to the grass courts. The highlight of the month-long part is obviously Wimbledon, and those who like the surface the most usually start the preparations the earliest, and the Stuttgart Open presents them with a great chance to do that.
The ATP 250 event in Stuttgart, also called the Boss Open for sponsorship reasons, starts on June 9th and runs until June 15th. It's held in the first week after the Roland Garros.
Therefore, it's not a surprise that players who made it deep at the clay-court Grand Slam won't compete during the first week of the grass-court part of the season. One exception is the top-seeded
Alexander Zverev, who made it to the quarter-finals in Paris and still chose to compete in Stuttgart.
The German player has an obvious motivation, with the tournament being played in his home country. Zverev, like all the top four seeded players, has a first-round bye. He will start in the second round, taking on the winner of the match between
Fabio Fognini and
Corentin Moutet.
On the opposite side of the draw is the second-seeded
Taylor Fritz. The American player will lose his World No. 4 rank after Roland Garros, dropping all the way to the seventh position, and his journey to regaining a spot in the Top 4 will begin in Stuttgart.
Fritz, as the second seed, will also start in the second round of the tournament. His first opponent will be either
Lorenzo Sonego or
Quentin Halys. In the quarter-finals, he could meet the fifth-seeded
Denis Shapovalov.
Ben Shelton will also compete in Stuttgart, and he will be the third seed. The American player has a game that could suit the grass courts, and he will try to prove that in the second round against Damir Dzumhur or a qualifier.
The fourth seed at the event,
Felix Auger-Aliassime, was given probably the most challenging draw out of all seeded players. The Canadian might start against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who will play against
Roman Safiullin in the first round.
Mpetshi Perricard is probably the biggest server on the ATP Tour right now, and he will be very difficult to beat for everyone during the grass-court part of the season.
One interesting name in the draw is Justin Angel. Born in 2007, this German player is still only 17 years old, and he was given a wild card to compete in Stuttgart. Engel will play against a qualifier in the first round, and if he wins that match, he will take on Alex Michelsen or
Gael Monfils.
