The 2025 Mexican Open in Acapulco, scheduled for February 24th until March 1st, contains one of the most impressive entry lists in the tournament's history.
There may have been some concerns among tournament organizers that the Mexican Open entry list would be weakened by the Dubai Tennis Championships, another ATP 500 tournament taking place in the same week.
However, that is not the case. Several top players in the draw should keep the fans in Acapulco entertained throughout the tournament, which Alex de Minaur won in 2023 and 2024.
Surprisingly, two-time defending champion de Minaur has decided not to return to Acapulco. He is among the players who decided to compete in Dubai instead of the event where he has been so successful.
Alexander Zverev is the highest-ranked player on the Mexican Open entry list. The German won the tournament in 2021, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-6 in the final. His run included a victory against a 17-year-old Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev hopes to respond strongly in February after losing the Australian Open final to Jannik Sinner. It was his third Grand Slam final loss, and he is still waiting for that elusive first Grand Slam title.
The 27-year-old's schedule will keep him busy and differs from last year. He has agreed to play on clay at the Argentina Open and Rio Open to experience competing in front of the passionate South American fans.
Zverev will then go straight from Rio to Acapulco without a week between tournaments. Adapting from the clay in South America to the hard courts in Mexico without much preparation time might be challenging.
Taylor Fritz is also on the entry list for the Mexican Open. The American No. 1 had a superb 2024 season, including finishing as the runner-up at the US Open and ATP Finals, but he suffered a surprising loss to Gael Monfils at the Australian Open.
Tommy Paul is another American in the draw. Zverev, Fritz, and Paul will play at an exhibition tournament scheduled for March 1st and 2nd in Las Vegas alongside Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka, and Naomi Osaka.
This raised questions since the first day of the exhibition was the same date as the Mexican Open final. However, Fritz later clarified that the opening day is just the women's match, and all the men's action is on March 2nd.
Ben Shelton is another exciting name on the Mexican Open entry list. The watchable American already made a mark this season by reaching the Australian Open semifinal, losing at that stage to the eventual champion Sinner.
Casper Ruud will hope to go one better than 2024 after losing to de Minaur in the final. The three-time Grand Slam runner-up is on the entry list once again and deserves to be considered among the favorites for the title.
Holger Rune, Frances Tiafoe, Lorenzo Musetti, Denis Shapovalov, and Hubert Hruakcz are other notable players on the 2025 Mexican Open entry list. It promises to be a great tournament in Acapulco.
