The draw for the 2025 Hobart International, which is one of only two WTA 250 events held at the start of the season, has been released.
The Hobart International has a tricky spot in the calendar, as it's held prior to the Australian Open, with plenty of WTA 500 events held in Australia scheduled on similar dates.
Still, the Hobart International, which runs from January 6th until 11th, manages to attract plenty of interesting players every year. Unfortunately for the tournament organizers, last year's champion, Emma Navarro, chose to compete in Adelaide this year instead of coming to Hobart.
Despite Navarro's absence, there will still be plenty of talented players in Hobart. Two of them are even Grand Slam champions. Sofia Kenin is one of the players who received a wild card, and she will try to make good use of that.
In the first round of the WTA 250 event, she will play against the fifth-seeded Lulu Sun. The winner of this match will play against the winner of the match between Anna Blinkova and Bernarda Pera in the second round of the tournament.
The top seed in Hobart is Dayana Yastremska, who will be tested by Katie Volynets in the opening round. But an even more difficult test might come in the second round. Another former major winner, Sloane Stephens, received a wild card as well, and she will start against one of the qualifiers.
Elise Mertens is one of the players who likes to play these WTA 250 tournaments, seeing the potential in weaker fields. That gives her a chance to collect valuable ranking points and improve her position for higher-tier events.
She is the second seed in Hobart, and her first-round opponent will be one of the qualifiers. If the Belgian player succeeds, then her second-round rival will be the winner of the match between Clara Tauson and Anhelina Kalinina.
One of the most interesting first-round matches will be that between the third-seeded Amanda Anisimova and home wild card Daria Saville. Both are incredibly talented players, and fans in Hobart should be treated to a spectacle when they take to the court.
The fourth-seeded Magda Linette will also face a proper first-round challenge, taking on Varvara Gracheva. The better of the two will clash with either Olga Danilovic or home wild card Maya Joint.
