Fans are excited about the 2025
Hangzhou Open after last year's iteration, which contained one of the most memorable stories of 2024. The
prize money and ranking points for the tournament starting on Wednesday have been unveiled.
Last year's Hangzhou Open was the tournament's maiden iteration. Often, newer events struggle to establish themselves alongside newer ones and can swiftly disappear from future editions of the calendar.
Marin Cilic's title run brought the event into the headlines. The 2014 US Open champion had struggled with a severe knee injury for the previous few years, and the probability of him winning another
ATP title looked minute.
Cilic confounded expectations by winning the 2024 Hangzhou Open. That made him the lowest-ranked ATP champion in tennis history and was one of the most feel-good stories of the 2024 season.
Several entertaining players have committed to the event starting on Wednesday. It will be
Daniil Medvedev's first tournament with his new coaches after he split from Gilles Cervara after eight years together.
Matteo Berrettini is also set to make his return to professional tennis. The injury-prone former Wimbledon runner-up has only played one event since getting injured on home soil at May's 2025 Italian Open.
Andrey Rublev and
Alexander Bublik are among the other players set to compete for the $1,019,185 prize money purse in Hangzhou. As always, the highest percentage of that will be awarded to whoever wins the tournament.
The 2025 Hangzhou Open champion will receive $154,980. That is slightly less than the $181,065 winner's guarantee at the Chengdu Open, which runs simultaneously with the tournament in Hangzhou, but the difference is negligible enough not to matter much.
Whoever triumphs at the Hangzhou Open will receive the usual 250 points awarded to tournament winners at the 250-level. That could be crucial for players who want to qualify for the 2025 ATP Finals or move up the rankings.
Daniil Medvedev might be one player particularly targeting the Hangzhou Open title. The 2021 US Open champion has not won any event for over two years, and an ATP 250-level tournament on a hard court is a particularly good opportunity.
Brandon Nakashima and Bu Yunchaokete were last year's defeated semifinalists in Hangzhou. The men who lose at that point in the upcoming event will be handed $53,165 and 100 ranking points for that solid result.
$30,805 and 50 points are on offer for the beaten quarterfinalists. Although less impressive than the later rounds, that is still a decent amount for players to have added to their bank accounts in their first tournament in Asia this year.
The 16 players who reach the second round will be handed $17,885 and 25 ranking points for their efforts. As usual, no ranking points are given to those who lose in the opening round at an ATP 250-level tournament, but $10,930 is their financial reward.
After the events in Hangzhou and Chengdu, bigger tournaments occur at the China Open, Japan Open, and Shanghai Masters.
Carlos Alcaraz is among those on the Japan Open entry list.
