The
ATP's Asian swing begins on Wednesday with two tournaments. One of these is the 2025
Chengdu Open, and the event's
prize money and ranking points have been released.
First played in 2016, the Chengdu Open has been a 250-level tournament since its inception. Last year's iteration was won by Shang Juncheng, who triumphed in front of his home fans against
Lorenzo Musetti in the final.
Karen Khachanov, Bernard Tomic, Denis Istomin, and Alexander Zverev are the former champions. The event did not occur from 2020 to 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which originated in China and led to draconian lockdown measures from its government.
Musetti will try to take the next step and become the Chengdu Open champion.
He should back himself as the No. 1 seed and in a draw that does not contain any other players ranked inside the Top 25.
Those in the main draw have an opportunity to battle for the highest percentage of a $1,190,210 prize money pot, which should give those involved ample incentive during their matches at the Chinese tournament.
The 2025 Chengdu Open champion will earn $181,065 for being the best player at this year's tournament. As one of the Top four seeds, Musetti gets a bye in the opening round, meaning he needs four wins to secure the title.
Although accumulating money is important for all players, the 250 ranking points on offer for the champion might matter more in his quest to qualify for the 2025 ATP Finals. The Italian currently occupies the final of the eight spots.
The Chengdu Open runner-up will receive 165 points and $105,610 in prize money. Predicting who will be the losing finalist at this year's iteration is challenging because the draw looks so open on paper.
$62,085 and 100 ranking points are the guaranteed reward for the two losing semifinalists. Yannick Hanfmann was among the men who fell at that stage last year, ending his hopes of winning a maiden ATP title.
Alexander Bublik, Adrian Mannarino, Nicolas Jarry, and Pedro Martinez were beaten in the 2024 quarterfinals. The men who replicate that achievement will win $35,970 and 50 points.
$20,885 and 25 ranking points will be awarded to those who advance to the round of 16 without further progress. No points are awarded to players who lose in the opening round at ATP 250 events, but $12,765 will still be handed out in prize money.
After the Chengdu Open and Hangzhou Opens, the China Open and Japan Opens are scheduled. Jannik Sinner will be the star attraction in Beijing at a tournament he won in 2023 and finished as the runner-up last year.
Carlos Alcaraz, despite winning the 2024 China Open, decided to
sign up for the Japan Open instead. That was a huge boost to the organizers in Tokyo, since the event's 2024 entry list was much weaker than its rival in Beijing.
Although many players will hope to make an impact, Sinner and Alcaraz, the dominant ATP players in the last few years, are the favorites to perform best in Asia.
