The women's edition of the 2025 Hamburg Open had its status downgraded last year, but it will return to being a WTA 250 tournament next month.
This year's Hamburg Open is scheduled for the week after the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, from July 14th to 20th. This demonstrates how the action on the WTA and ATP tours does not stop except during the weeks in November and December when the season is finished.
After Kim Clijsters defeated Venus Williams in a blockbuster 2002 final, the women's singles and doubles were not played in Hamburg from 2003 to 2020. It returned in 2021, when Elena-Gabriela Ruse triumphed in the final against Andrea Petkovic, now a respected analyst.
The 2024 Olympics, occurring a few weeks after last year's Wimbledon Championships, led to the Hamburg Open being played as a WTA 125 event. In the final, Anna Bondar defeated the 2023 winner, Arantxa Rus.
Controversial WTA rules limiting the number of high-ranked players who can feature at 250-level tournaments and the event's place immediately after Wimbledon mean attracting top players was never going to be easy.
Although no Top 20 players are on the entry list, there are women with enjoyable playing styles who are likely to entertain the German fans. The list includes two former Grand Slam semifinalists.
Tatjana Maria is among the players set to feature in Hamburg. The 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist recently had an absolutely extraordinary run to the most significant title of her career at the 2025 Queen's Club Championships.
Maria had lost her previous seven matches before the tournament at the Queen's Club. That terrible spell of form, combined with her age of 37, meant it looked like her career was petering out, and retirement was looming.
After coming through qualifying, Maria defeated Leylah Fernandez, Karolina Muchova, Elena Rybakina, 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys, and Amanda Anisimova to win the title.
That was her first WTA 500 title. Maria's age, form before the tournament, and beating four Grand Slam finalists made it one of the most incredible title runs on the WTA Tour in the 21st century.
The experienced Maria will try to find more inspiration in front of her home fans. She can expect to face stiff competition from other players on the entry list, including Yulia Putintseva.
After an impressive 2024, Putintseva has struggled much more this season. However, a WTA 250 tournament on clay, where she would be the top seed unless a higher-ranked player is given a wild card, could be the ideal opportunity for her to win a title.
When she plays her best tennis, Dayana Yastremska can be challenging to stop. The 2024 Australian Open semifinalist is very inconsistent but possesses a powerful style capable of blowing away many others on the Hamburg Open entry list.
Eva Lys will give the German crowd another player to support. A few weeks ago, she defeated the 2025 Italian Open semifinalist Peyton Stearns at Roland Garros, proving what the 23-year-old is capable of on clay.
Xinyu Wang, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, defending champion Bondar, and Moyuka Uchijima are among the other women on the Hamburg Open entry list.
