The 2025 Dubai Championships is the second WTA 1000 tournament of the season, and the entry list couldn't be more star-studded.
In 2025, the first two WTA 1000 tournaments will be held back-to-back once again. First, players will compete at the Qatar Open in Doha, and after that, they will move to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
It will be the 25th edition of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which is how the tournament is officially called because of sponsorship reasons.
Over the years, the WTA tournament at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre was won by almost every legend of the game. The list of champions includes names such as Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, and Venus Williams.
In recent yers, a few surprising champions emerged at the Dubai Championships. In 2023, Barbora Krejcikova won the tournament, and last year, Jasmine Paolini recorded her first big triumph in Dubai when she was ranked only as World No. 26.
That means the Italian player will return to Dubai as the defending champion in 2025. But the task of defending her title won't be an easy one, quite the opposite.
Every eligible player signed up for the 2025 Dubai Championships. That means the entry list is led by the World No. 1 player Aryna Sabalenka, and former finalist Iga Swiatek will compete as well.
The likes of Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina will be among the favorites in Dubai as well. Both know how it feels like to win a big title, having triumphed at a Grand Slam and WTA 1000 tournament as well.
The likes of Qinwen Zheng, Jessica Pegula, and Emma Navarro headline the second wave of favorites in Dubai, who will want to replicate the surprising triumphs of Krejcikova and Paolini from the previous years.
Two players used their special ranking to enter the tournament. Belinda Bencic will be one of the players competing, and Sorana Cirstea used her special ranking as well. This ranking allows players who were injured (or pregnant) for a longer period to return to the competition while entering tournaments with their previous ranking.
A couple of exciting players who didn't make it to the main draw directly are Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu. Both are former Grand Slam champions, but Osaka was 10 positions from the cut-off, while Raducanu missed out on the main draw spot by 20 places.
That means both will either have to rely on the wild card from the tournament organizers or enter the qualifying of the the tournament.
