The 2025 ASB Classic is the first WTA 250 tournament of the new season, and the entry list for the event in New Zealand has already been released.
The ASB Classic, which is held at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, has a very challenging spot in the calendar, as three days before it starts, the United Cup begins, and one day prior to the ASB Classic start, the first WTA 500 tournament of the year, the Brisbane International kicks off.
That means the vast majority of the high-ranked players will usually sign up for those tournaments, and in 2025, it also meant that the tournament lost its biggest star in the past few years.
Coco Gauff won the tournament in two consecutive years, but in 2025, she chose to start her season at the United Cup instead of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
Her absence significantly opened up the field, but there will still be one former champion who will compete in Auckland. Sloane Stephens won the tournament in 2016, and she will return in 2025.
With the United Cup starting three days prior and the Brisbane International running alongside, most of the players that signed up for the ASB Classic are players who already tasted big success in their careers, but for various reasons, their ranking dropped in recent months.
One of those is Emma Raducanu, who got injured at the event in the past and then slammed the tournament organizers for slippery courts. Still, she chose to play at the tournament in 2025.
She was one of the players announced early, and the tournament director of the ASB Classic even disclosed that the ticket sales always spike when Raducanu's name is announced.
Another former Grand Slam champion who will play at the tournament is Naomi Osaka. The four-time major winner will be looking to build strong form ahead of the Australian Open, the major that she won twice in her career.
Joining her on the entry list is another former Australian Open champion, Sofia Kenin. She, too, is ranked far away from her career high and will participate in Auckland.
The entry list is led by Madison Keys, Elise Mertens, Amanda Anisimova, and Lulu Sun, who are the four highest-ranked players who signed up for the event.
The likes of Clara Tauson, Katie Volynets, and Julia Grabher will try to make a dark horse run in Auckland, but the strong opposition will try to prevent that.
